A Special Exhibition on 2018 Mars Perihelic Opposition and Total Lunar Eclipse. Among the many astronomical events that occurred in the second half of 2018, Mars Perihelic Opposition and total lunar eclipse that occurred consecutively at the end of July were the most remarkable ones.
Mars perihelic opposition and total lunar eclipse took place from the night of 27 July to the next morning. Mars opposition occurs when Mars, the Earth and the Sun lie on a straight line. Mars is in perihelic opposition if it is almost closest to the Sun while in opposition and it will appear brighter. During the night of 27 July, Mars appeared as a bright reddish orange dot with the naked eyes. Starting from 3:30 a.m. next day, the second total lunar eclipse of the year was observed in the southwest. The eclipse lasted for about 104 minutes. The Moon and Mars was quite close that night which was quite a coincidence.
