Space Theatre
Space Theatre

overview

Commanding a hemispherical screen of 23 metres in diameter, the Space Theatre has been serving the public since 1980. Boasting the first OMNIMAX projection system in the eastern hemisphere, Hong Kong Space Museum is also the first planetarium in the world to possess a fully automated audiovisual computer system for projecting sky shows at its Space Theatre.

With the advent of digital projection technology, the Museum renovated its Space Theatre facilities in 2009, incorporating a new Sky Skan digital planetarium projection system, and installed chairs embedded with multi-language and interactive system. In 2012, the digital planetarium projection system was further upgraded to include projection facilities for 3D dome shows. The Space Theatre underwent a largest ever renovation in 2021. The major part of the project was the replacement of the dome screen. Utilising the latest NanoSeam technology, the new screen offers a seamless viewing experience, enabling sharper and more colourful images for different shows. Other facilities of the Space Theatre, including the digital sky projection system, audio equipment, the control studio and the production studio have been upgraded with cutting-edge technologies to provide audiences with exhilarating audiovisual experiences.

Every year, the Museum selects the best Sky Shows, OMNIMAX and 3D Dome Shows to be screened in the Space Theatre.

Music Sky Show "The Chinese Sky" VR 360 Video

Screened in November 2018 at the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Music Sky Show "The Chinese Sky" aims to introduce the ancient Chinese constellations. The show has also participated in different international fulldome festivals like the IMERSA Summit 2019 in the USA, International Festival of Science Visualization 2019 in Japan and Fulldome Festival Brno 2019 in the Czech Republic. It has no narration or dialogue, just beautiful music as we believe nature speaks to us in its own language. One will find that the magnificent night sky can be appreciated both visually and aurally.
