The OMNIMAX Show "Sea Lions: Life by a Whisker" tells a coming-of-age tale filled with hope and wonder, told through a vast ocean that connects us all.
Between a jagged cliff face and a roaring ocean, lives one of the rarest marine mammals on the planet, the endangered Australian Sea Lion, and one very special pup named Otto. She learns to navigate her beautiful but harsh coastal environment with the help of her mother and others in her colony.
Join us for this heart-warming journey with Otto to meet the giant humpback whales, cunning cuttlefish, great white sharks, and one Marine Park Ranger on a mission to find out what it takes to save this species.
With excellent night vision and whiskers ten times more sensitive than that of the cats, Australian sea lions can travel up to 100 kilometres from their breeding colony for feeding.
Made up of over 80% water, cuttlefish is one of the favourite foods of Australian sea lions and is also their main hydration source. However, hunting cuttlefish is not an easy task as they can change colours and contours to mimic the environment.
Although Australian sea lions are protected species, their numbers have been reduced by one-fourth in the last decade. One of their greatest threats is micro-thin fishing nets. As these nets are hard to be noticed, sea lions can easily be entangled.
Whaling ban had saved the once endangered humpback whales from extinction. There are now over 40,000 humpback whales along the West coast of Australia and is the largest population on Earth.
California sea lions once faced the threat of extinction as well. Today, their population has resumed normal. Dirk Holman, a Marine Park Ranger from Australia, has come to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito to find out the keys to their recovery.
Could we save these endangered Australian sea lions?
